Discover the iconic military vehicles introduced between 1976 and 1985, the types 451 and 461, renowned for their robust Deutz V8 Diesel engine, type F8L413F, delivering a powerful 256 hp. These versatile trucks, primarily used as flatbeds and covered wagons, play a crucial role in transporting materials and troops. They also serve as carriers for the Kabine II of the FERA system of the Light Artillery Rocket System (LARS) and as recovery vehicles for the KZO "Brevel" drone, featuring a 1-ton crane by Atlas-Weyhausen. Notably, the tank trucks based on the 5 t mil gl, with their tank attachment ("Tankaufsatz", TA) and pump, come in configurations of either 1x 4600 l or 2x 2300 l tanks, slightly exceeding the max. gross weight by one ton. To address this, tire pressure was increased with the approval of the tire manufacturer, ensuring all vehicles maintain a certificate of exemption.
Distinguishing themselves, the type 461 vehicles are outfitted with a 5-ton winch and 30m of steel cable, indicated by the letter "w" in their designation (5 t mil glw), capable of extending both frontwards and rearwards. The majority of these winch-equipped trucks were allocated to the army branch. From 1986 to 1993, the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) commissioned additional vehicles designed for airlift in Lockheed C-130 Hercules and Transall C-160 transport aircraft, marking the advent of the KAT I A1 generation. These models introduced minor improvements and modifications, such as a modified cab for easier engine replacement and a bolt-on hardtop for airlift compatibility.
